композитор, дирижёр, оперный режиссёр. Своим творчеством подготовил появление музыкального экспрессионизма. Симфония-кантата "Песнь о земле" считается крупнейшим явлением симфонизма конца XIX - нач. XX вв. Как дирижёр внёс большой вклад в развитие музыкального театра. Способствовал расцвету венской Придворной оперы "Das Lied von der Erde"
